Smart meter information to help consumer

GasNZ has worked with the wider gas sector to provide impartial and credible information for consumers around smart gas meters.

With smart meters gradually replacing the traditional analogue gas meters, gas retailers have been fielding questions from some customers as to their safety and/or concerns around data privacy.

These concerns mirror similar fears that were expressed by a small but significant number of electricity customers when smart meters were introduced for monitoring electricity consumption in recent years.

Working with the Gas Industry Company and Genesis, factual information about smart gas meters was developed and published on the GasNZ website – drawing on information previously developed by Utilities Disputes, Consumer NZ, the Privacy Commissioner and others in relation to smart electricity meters.

Retailers can refer those customers who have concerns to this information – which includes direct links to further information on the topic provided by the Ministry of Health, Citizens Advice Bureau and the Privacy Commissioner.
